The Sadness of “News”

Reading the news is so very depressing to me. I must have forgotten that sometime during the last few years because now I find myself reading the news almost every day, hoping that it might bring me some sense of enjoyment, yet coming away feeling the craziness and chaos of the world around us.

Quite often, the news is about tragedies that are occurring in the world, or about miraculous cures to ailments or other deadly agents that are plaguing some group of people or animals on our planet. Someone once told me that it’s impossible to read the news every day without at least one horrible incident being reported on. I personally think it’s at least two horrible incidents, minimum.

People read the news for a number of reasons: the sensationalism, learning what’s happening in the world that affects their personal lives, and because they’re bored and need some material to converse with their friends about.

The news does have its bright sides though, like reporting the TRUTH of what’s really going on. The news is a great medium to inform all those wonderful, free-thinking people who really care about the communities they live in, and who are on a mission to get the facts straight so the people around them can live better lives. I fully support activist individuals and organizations who really do give a damn.

But Jesus! Who really wants to hear about tragedy every day of their lives? I’m not saying that if we put our heads in the sand, the badness of the world will simply dissapear. But if we constantly surround ourselves with pain, anger, stupidity, tragedy, horror and depression, no doubt they will rub off on us at some point.

I think I’m quitting news for a while and going back to my old life of just being with friends & family, spending time outdoors, and doing fun activities that raise my heart rate in a healthy way rather than from depression and stress.
